Playright Can Help Improve Visual Perception
Visual perception refers to the process by which the brain interprets and makes sense of visual information from the eyes. When visual perception is impaired, it can affect the development of many functional skills, including recognizing and distinguishing visual information, accurately judging movements through space relative to other people or objects, difficulty discerning foreground from background, challenges with recalling visual details or sequences of symbols, difficulty reading, difficulty writing and drawing, challenges achieving independence with daily tasks.
Visual perception encompasses the ability to perceive and understand the visual world, including recognizing forms, objects, shapes, colors, motion, depth, and spatial relationships. Children learn, solve problems, and use their eyes and brains to understand the world around them.
Occupational Therapists evaluate the specific nature of visual perceptual deficits and how they impact daily function. OTs teach compensatory strategies to minimize the effect of visual perceptual deficits and to assist children in understanding and advocating for their needs. Often, a child assumes everyone perceives things the way they do, and they do not verbalize what they are experiencing visually. Consequently, visual perceptual deficits can go undiagnosed and interfere with function.
When addressing visual perceptual deficits, occupational therapists can design activities to improve visual skills, such as tracking, scanning, visual discrimination, and spatial perception. If visual perceptual deficits are related to sensory processing issues, occupational therapists may incorporate sensory integration techniques to help individuals better process and integrate visual information. Therapists may recommend modifying a child’s environment to make it more conducive to their specific visual needs. Therapy sessions may involve practicing relevant daily tasks in real-life contexts. Occupational therapists work with individuals to improve their ability to perform daily activities and enhance their overall quality of life.
If you suspect your child may be struggling with a visual perceptual challenge, Playright can help identify which aspects of visual perception are impacted and can recommend a program to remediate visual perceptual skills and accommodate for visual perceptual deficits.
We look forward to seeing you!
