About This Story

This story is about Misunderstandings

  • Have you ever been disappointed, only to find out it was a misunderstanding?

  • In this story, Milo learns that jumping to wrong conclusions can result from misunderstandings.

Milo the Monkey

A playful monkey named Milo loved to swing from vine to vine, but what he loved most was spending time with his friends.

While munching on a juicy mango, Milo heard birds chirping excitedly nearby. They were talking about a party for one of his close friends, Ellie Elephant's birthday.

Ellie’s mom had sent invitations to all of Ellie’s playmates, but Milo’s invitation was swept away in the wind before he ever saw it. Milo felt sad because he thought that he was not invited.

As Milo sat alone in the tree feeling sad, he saw his friend Tina the Turtle creeping along the jungle floor. Tina noticed that Milo’s eyes and face looked sad. "Milo, what is wrong? Aren’t you coming to the party? Your face looks sad." she said.

"I wasn’t invited," Milo replied with a sigh.

Tina stopped and said, “Milo, you are one of Ellie’s closest friends, of course you are invited! It must be a misunderstanding. Don’t you want to celebrate with her?”

“I do want Ellie to know I wish her happy birthday. You are right, I should go to the party to celebrate with my friend.”

Tina smiled and said, "Come with me. The party is at the peanut patch." Milo's face lit up with happiness. He thanked Tina, and together, they made their way to the peanut patch.

When they arrived, Milo saw friends gathered around Ellie, singing and dancing. The peanut patch was decorated with colorful flowers and balloons. Ellie welcomed Milo and Tina with a big hug. "I'm so glad you are here," she said. “I was starting to worry that you could not make it, because I never heard back after the invitations were mailed.”

"Well, I didn’t get an invitation, but Tina told me there must have been a mix up and that I should come with her to wish you a happy day," Milo said.

“Of course you are invited Milo,” said Ellie. “It would not be a celebration without you my friend!”

Milo enjoyed the party with his friends, eating peanuts and playing games. On his way home, he was stopped by Postmaster Puffin, who apologized and handed him the invitation to Ellie’s party. “This was returned to the post office. It was found alongside the road, said the Postmaster” Milo grinned, feeling relieved that he truly was invited to Ellie’s special day.
